The National x Graham MacIndoe
40 page broadsheet format zine for The National’s Cherry Tree members at their two-night Homecoming Cincinnati festival in 2023.
Graham has had a relationship with The National for over 25 years, starting with their first promotional photo in 2001, and has continued through their entire career. This special edition zine has mostly unseen and unpublished photographs by Graham from the five years between 2018 and 2023. It starts with a throwback to the first Homecoming in Cincinnati in 2018, with glimpses of the band’s rehearsal in Kentucky, followed by some of their first gigs after a break due to the pandemic. The last section features a selection of images from 2022 through to The National’s epic night at Madison Square Garden in New York City with Patti Smith on August 18, 2023.“Whenever, Wherever is a line from Send for Me on The National’s album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, but it also sums up my attitude when it comes to my ongoing documentation of the band.“
The editing process began with Graham giving Wally a drive of thousands of photos from between 2018 and 2023, where Wally started to look for patterns and combinations and, as Graham said, “You’re going to see things, see relationships and connections that I won’t.”
Dates were made with a rubber stamp and paired with low resolution printouts before scanning.
Printing was handled by Linco Printing in Long Island City, New York.
The Homecoming Cincinnati two day music festival was held on September 15th and 16th, 2023. The National headlined both nights supported by Patti Smith and Her Band, The Walkmen, Weyes Blood, Pavement, Snail Mail, Bartees Strange and more. Wally & Graham with their copies backstage in Cincinnati.
