Lawrence Kim The Hours and The Times LPFor their third collaboration after Lawrence’s After the Weather and Santee EPs, The Hours and The Times was their first physical media release. The process began with a conversation and listening to the early mixes. We saw that there were patterns of duality and dichotomies and multiple states of being - both in the songs themselves and the title of the LP.The physicality of the LP reinforced the duality theme with the front and back of the sleeve and side A / side B of the vinyl.
The collaboration continued in the studio with photographer Meredith Truax. Together we explored a range of ideas with Meredith’s lighting experiments in-camera.
More in-camera experimentation with lighting led us to a territory that created the two Lawrences, both ethereal and physical. This connected to our original idea of duality and led us to wrapping the photo from the back to front of the sleeve.
Purposefully wonky monospaced type for Lawrence’s name and LP title on the front and song titles on the back was paired with NuForm’s Rotina type for the credits on the bottom of the sleeve.
The same typographic sensibility for the titles were carried to the LP labels – but curved this time, following the form of the record. The Hours and The Times – as well as Lawrence’s other EPs including two other collaborations with Wally, Santee and After the Weather – is available on Lawrence Kim’s Bandcamp page.
